On Friday, RomanMachine and I got to see his one-man song-and-dance show he's been performing at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto for the last two weeks. From seeing his hosting duties on both the Tony Awards and the Oscars, I had an idea that he was quite talented in the singing area, but I'll tell you, I had no idea he was that talented! That man can sing... and dance. I told RomanMachine that he's the gayest straight man I've ever seen. And absolutely charming. He seemed to be able to engage with every single member of the audience without missing a beat. But the highlight of the night was a moment between him and a lady in the front row. As we found out, she was turning 80 in 2 weeks and drove up to Toronto from Pittsburgh just to see him. She had flown to Australia to see him in "The Boy from Oz" on her 75th birthday. He was so stunned that he arranged- on the spot- for her to get backstage after the show. And he got the crowd to sing her "Happy Birthday". It was so sweet. Okay, so that wasn't entirely the highlight of the night- RM and I met him outside the stage door before the show. There were quite a few people there, and he was running late, but he stopped for everyone, whether they wanted autographs or photos. (I'll post some later. ;D) Charming, sweet, and smelled real nice. I tried not to squeal!

Glad you enjoyed the show.
A lot of people don't realise that Hugh Jackman started his career in musical theatre. He got a lot of coverage over in the UK when he played Curly in the National Theatre revival of Carousel back in the 1990's. We have the Cameron Mackintosh celebration DVD 'Hey, Mr Producer' and Jackman sings on that with Joanna Riding (another excellent singer) playing Julie Jordan. He has a fabulous voice.

RM, who is from Oklahoma, says it's the only time she doesn't mind hearing that damn song. ;D She need not have worried- he sang "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" instead. He told the audience the story of how he auditioned for the role of Wolverine in between the matinee and evening shows of Oklahoma!. So he showed up in full cowpoke gear and... perm. (He was playing Curly.) The casting director liked him but suggested he lose the perm. He did a rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that was heart-breaking. I'll never quite look at Wolverine the same again.
