I know some of you have been around since the early Bad Girl days and you've read everything. But take pity on poor n00bs like myself, where many of these articles are still brand new! So, in order to help the newbies out, I thought it would be cool to post links to articles here. They can be from print media or online sources, it doesn't matter. If it's about Mandana, post the link here. Just one request- before you post the link, check back to see if someone else has already posted that article. Thanks! I'll start with one that topcat posted in the birthday thread that was brand new to me! And, of course, the brilliant AfterEllen interview. web.archive.org/web/20010331061406/www.badgirls.co.uk/tvquick/Bg1/tvquick.html www.afterellen.com/People/2006/10/mandana.html

What a great report on the tv quick awards. I don't know if I would have waited that long in the cold for Mandana, but heh, maybe I would have! ;D
Anybody know what is this about? This event took place in Sept 2000, so it was before S3 aired. What's the significance of Malaga, Spain? It sounds like it was some kind of spoiler for S3, and yet, on the show, they didn't go to Spain until S5 with the Costa Cons. Did the fans think Nikki & Helen were going to end up in Spain? (which would have been kinda awesome). It isn't real clear what this fan is alluding to. Anybody know?

Hi Nikkhele You have to remember that, at this time, the fans were left in suspense from the series 2 finale. Months and months of trying to predict whether Helen would phone the police etc etc. As you say, 3 had not aired. All sorts of rumours were flying around - one being that Nikki got shot and dies trying to escape - and I think either Shed or a tabloid made a cryptic comment that, in the new series '2 Larkhall regulars end up on Spain'. You can imagine who they suspected. It was quite a clever bit of publicity and had fans in a spin!! I think other pre publicity for series 3 included comments about 'lesbian lifers covorting in Spain'. Of course, they meant Shell and Denny Unwittingly, at these awards, Mandana turns up with a deep tan and tells them she has just flown in from Ibiza. This just added to fan theories. Poor woman had just been on a private holiday with her man and couldn't understand all the interest in where she'd been.. In some ways I think new fans really miss out on that buzz of not knowing what was going to happen and it's hard trying to describe it! Every week, when an episode aired, the boards would be heaving with either disappointment that Nikki and/or Helen had not been in it or dissecting every little thing they said. Obviously, no one delved into whether Helen was wearing a fan as a halo because Shed were portraying a Saint No the debate was more around whether you could hear Nikki's flip flops or what flowers would be in her barrow but it was interesting, nonetheless

Oh right! I forgot about Denny and Shell going to Spain. I can see how fans would be speculating that it was Nikki & Helen. Wouldn't that have been awesome? OTOH, Nikki would have never been released if they found out she had escaped. Heh. Yeah, that must have been kinda strange for Mandana, like how did the fans know she was on holiday in Spain? Well, they didn't, just asking about rumours re N&H! Poor thing. You're right, I can't imagine what it was like seeing it as it aired. The anxiety would have been unbearable. Well, at least for me. It damn near killed me watching it on DVD barely able to contain myself from jumping to the end. It also helped me knowing how the story would end. I don't know if I could have watched it otherwise. OTOH, I'm kinda sorry I had already seen N&H clips online beyond S1. I wasn't as surprised by the ups and downs as I would have liked, 20/20 vision and all. I envy fans who are watching it without knowing a thing, even something as simple as knowing Nikki & Helen get together! Oh well, still love this show

I don't recall ever having a viewing experience like it. I mean, I've come into a show a year later and have frantically caught up, but with Bad Girls, despite the rate at which I consumed all the clips and information once I got into the show, it wasn't really necessary- because I'm literally YEARS late, this show is frozen in time for me. It's quite an unusual viewing experience. I'm sorry I missed that anticipation of being a viewer who was watching it as it was being presented. As for halos and angels and Victorian narrative, poke RomanMachine and ask her to finish that King Arthur parallelism she was working on! Nikki is Sir Percival. No, ask her, it's great stuff!!

Wow, I forgot all about that King Arthur essay. You should have reminded me sooner. I'll have to finish that up. It'll be good for a laugh. I agree about the unusual viewing experience, but I don't know that I would have liked all the anticipation. It was tough enough just waiting for all the online clips to download. Wondering for months if Helen really called the police or not might have been too much for me.

The ibiza article topcat mentioned in another thread: www.ibiza-voice.com/news/news.php?id=913I'm torn between thinking it's "our" MJ or if it's just a coincidence, top. The Ibiza connection strengthens the idea that it might be her (I saw in one of the posts above that she had holidayed there between series 2 and 3 of Bad Girls), and even the writing style "sounds" like her. But it was the second paragraph that throws a large dose of doubt into it: Your innocent reporter wonders how people survive here! The grey skies, endless cars and rain make us homesick so it's a great relief to arrive just as the Sun bursts through and we make a beeline for the Ibiza Tent tent. The reporter sounds like she's never/rarely been to London and that she's from Ibiza ("make us homesick"). Thoughts?

Well, I had similar thoughts cb. There is something about the writing style that is familiar but, as well as the inference being that the author is an infrequent visitor to London, I just cannot imagine Mandana being into that kind of drum and base music. Don't ask me why other than an age thing. Mandana once described herself as having a 'rock and roll' side but that conjured up, for me, more a liking for Led Zeppelin and Genesis than this kind of music!!!
Pros:
-The article was written in 2006 when Mandana was, supposedly, still living 'in Spain'.
-Writing style
-the name ;D
-partner described as a musician with an interest in following music styles
Cons:
-style of music
-suggests the author is a permanent resident of Ibiza
-would you cavort around music festivals when you've got (at that time) a babe in arms??
-if 'soap man' is partner, he looks more like a classical musician than the owner/frequenter of Ibiza nightclubs

But... but... according to those in the know, Mandana likes "Allsorts!" (Which makes me think of the candy, but nevermind. ) I do think the year is the big clue, too. Had it been pre-2005, it might have been more likely. But yeah, not with a babe in arms. It gives us something to ponder though, no?

But... but... according to those in the know, Mandana likes "Allsorts!" (Which makes me think of the candy, but nevermind. ) Oh you mean like when she was asked at the age of 36 "what kind of music do you like?" and answered vaguely "all sorts'" (no liquorice in sight ) and then this was miraculously morphed into Profile - "FAVOURITE MUSIC: Allsorts! (Punk, Reggae etc)" Bio - "Like most teenagers Mandana liked music, ranging from Reggae to Punk!" There is nothing like a good ponder There is the other possibility that she was not the 'author' but translator of the piece or it's some mad fan who goes around using her name as a pseudonim or has changed their name by deed poll. No, wait. It would have been Nikki Wade.......

Fantastic ;D She stops short of telling us about him. I want to know more about Enzo's dad. ;D BTW the journalist is related to that guy who wrote Dr ZhivagoAnd thanx for the article, Top. Mandana talks so deep. Wouldn't surprise me if she was a top student at her school.

I've always loved that term, "fell pregnant". It's like a slip into a baby puddle. I do think we're breaking away from the stringent dogma of organized religion that "spirituality" has been associated with- spiritually no longer only means finding a spiritual path based on outside influences, but also finding a spiritual path within oneself. I don't shy away from describing myself as an atheist, but I still do try to find a sense of spirituality in myself and in the world around me. Great find, top!
