Romanmachine and I got to talking a few weeks back about the old adage, "You learn something new every day". We were wondering if it really was true, then discovered something interesting- once we posed the question, we found in the days to follow that it did seem like we learned something new every day! I meant to start a blog specifically for this idea, but since I probably won't get around to it (me, lazy? What? ), I thought it would still be a cool idea to post here. I will do my best to post whenever I learn something new, and we'll see if it really is every day! What we'd like you to do is, well, do the same! If you learn something new, feel free to post it, even if it turns out it's not every day. (As a bit of extra interest, if you remember where you learned it, or in what context the information came to you, include that with your post.) Retroactively to cover the 1st of the year- I learned that Helen Reddy beat Bette Midler's cover of "Delta Dawn" by 5 days. (Discovered when I was trying to figure out if she covered it before Tanya Tucker. Don't ask! I didn't say what I learned had to be useful!! ;D) Today- I learned how to tell if an egg is raw or hard-boiled (without cracking it open, of course!!) Spin it like a top- if it spins, it's cooked. If it doesn't, it's raw. (I would think it's something to do with the liquid in the egg preventing the balance needed for circular force.) I learned that from my chef boss, after I found an egg sitting on the counter at work. Feel free to add your own!

Jan 3rd- Liverpool legend, Bill Shankly, got his start playing for Preston. His first goal? Against Liverpool. (Learned while watching the Preston North End/Liverpool FA Cup match today.)

Jan 3rd approx 22.30. Terrence Cuneo was an artist who painted steam trains that had a hidden mouse in each one.
Brother in law is a locomotives freak and, in a moment of merriment at a party last night, Mr Topcat suggested that our niece and nephew should try and find the (nonexistent) unicorn in a painting hanging above their fire place. This led to conversations about things hidden in paintings.

Whoa! As usual, I'm absolutely lazy! Things I've learned over the last week: -a black widow's bite is 15 times more venomous than a rattlesnake ( Les Stroud, Survivorman) -Didi Hamann played the 2005 Champions League match against AC Milan with a broken foot (footie magazine)

This is more in the you notice something.............. According to Mandana's wiki profile: An excerpt: 'Probably her most high-profile role is as lesbian lifer Nicola "Nikki" Wade on Bad Girls, in which her on-screen love interest, Helen Stewart, was played by another former cast member of London Bridge - Simone Lahbib'. An excerpt from SL's wiki: 'She is best known for her television roles[....] playing Wing Governor Helen Stewart in the highly acclaimed ITV drama Bad Girls'. I just wonder what Mandana will make of it? And here's MJ's profile on IMDb: An excerpt:'Her role on ITV award winning drama'Bad Girls' is what most people associate her with. Mandana became a gay icon to millions of women through her role on Bad Girls playing Nikki Wade and is very proud of the shows achievements'.

To be honest, jilly, I wouldn't take any notice of entries on Wiki or IMBd. Anyone can update info on there. Some fans seem to not be able to separate one from the other - especially separating Mandana from Simone as opposed to Simone from Mandana (if that makes sense). To be fair, I think what you have quoted from Simone's entry sounds far more professional. Why people have to forever link the two is beyond me. She played Nikki Wade in Bad Girls for 3 seasons. That is all an entry need say. I think the most baffling biography comment regarding Mandana I have ever seen is: " Mandana went on to acting school at the Drama Centre in London. The same drama centre that most of her co-stars in Othello's 2003 stage production attended, and also the same drama school of her Bad Girls series 3 co-star Helen Grace. So what??? She went to The Drama Centre London. End of. A link to Rachel Weiss anyone ;D Can't think that I have learned anything new today, as yet!

It's splodgy's handiwork. Their emphasis on 'gay icon' 'lesbian lifer' and downplaying her other roles is what in dispute here. I don't remember in which interview Mandana was saying that her role as Nikki Wade shouldn't be prefixed with 'lesbian' in this day.

To be honest, jilly, I wouldn't take any notice of entries on Wiki or IMBd. Anyone can update info on there. Yeah you're right. Tho the IMDb is updated by MJ.Net. Yep it's like Mandana's role as Nikki Wade carries weight only when linked to Simone's Helen Stewart. And why the need to mention Simone Lahbib in MJ's profile. I don't see Mandana's name mentioned in SL's profile. Yes agreed. Also I don't know if you noticed there's no mention of 'gay' or 'lesbian' in Simone's entry. It's like Mandana cannot stand on her own laurels. Oops. ;D *As usual you have articulated so much better than I have.

Q.E.D ;D Yesterday I learned that the actor Michael Sheen's (Frost/Nixon, The Queen) father makes a living as a Jack Nicholson impersonator. Michael was being interviewed on Radio Two.

Mick Jagger is an uncredited background singer on Carly Simon's song, "You're So Vain". (And is rumoured to be one of a short list of potential men the song is about.)

The St Leger, run at Doncaster, not too far from me, is the oldest of the British Classic horse races. And, I don't even like hoss racing. ;D

There are 40,000 muscles in an elephant's trunk. This fact gleaned from watching the excellent The secret life of elephants on BBC1.

The phrase "mad as a hatter" originated because Mercury was used in the making of hats. This affected the nervous systems of hatters, causing them to tremble and appear insane. Read in the free Metro paper someone left on the train when I travelled up to sunny Leeds on Wednesday. Not really related to this thread (the one it relates to is closed ) so I apologise. I was creating a survey for a work related matter yesterday using surveymonkey.com. I suddenly realised that all the examples on the site were all about peanut butter and being smooth or crunchy etc

The veggie burger originated in London. Learned this fact from watching Travel Channel's 'Hamburger Paradise'. Who knew?

In the film Young Frankenstein, Gene Hackman was uncredited for his role as the blind man during the original theatrical release. The last line of the scene, "Wait! Where are you going? I was going to make espresso," was ad libbed.
