Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of OK Computer. Wow. It doesn't seem that long, and yet somehow it seems so much longer. This album will forever be on my Top 3 Desert Island Picks, though I can't really pinpoint why. Perhaps it's because it's one of the few albums I can listen to from start to finish, skipping no songs. Perhaps certain songs remind me of a certain time in my life- I still remember my younger sister, 15 years ago, reading the liner notes for the lyrics to "Paranoid Android" and laughing at the fact they wrote out "From a great heeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight" as a lyric line. And yet I remember as recently as January, hearing "No Surprises" over the speakers at work, and me cheerfully singing, "I'll take the quiet life and handshake the carbon monoxide" as I helped prepare the store for its last week in business.
I've enjoyed their stuff that followed, and some I've really liked- "Jigsaw Puzzle Falling into Place" may be the most perfect song I've ever heard, and I've got "The Daily Mail" on constant rotation on my iPod- but I don't know if they've done anything that I've ever really loved as much as OK Computer. (The only way that album could have been better is if "Street Spirit" had been on it.)
."Airbag" – 4:44
."Paranoid Android" – 6:23
."Subterranean Homesick Alien" – 4:27
."Exit Music (For a Film)" – 4:24
."Let Down" – 4:59
."Karma Police" – 4:21
."Fitter Happier" – 1:57
."Electioneering" – 3:50
."Climbing Up the Walls" – 4:45
."No Surprises" – 3:48
."Lucky" – 4:19
."The Tourist" – 5:24
RomanMachine and I had tickets to go to their show at Downsview Park in Toronto last night. A horrible accident occurred and one person died when the overhang for the stage collapsed, an hour before the gates opened. Had it been an hour later, who knows how many may have died? It was general admission and we may have been up there at the front. Horrible tragedy on what otherwise would have been a remarkable day in Radiohead's history. RIP to their drum tech, Scott Johnson, who lost his life.
