Years ago I was really into Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her romance with Robert. She wrote a LOT of letters and imagine my delight one day to happen on a letter to one of her friends where she trash talked Jane Austen. She was NO fan....but her friend was. ;D I love that title "Lost in Austen" especially when you say it fast! I don't know much about EBB as I'm not into poetry. But I remember reading that Robert Browning wrote a fan letter to EBB and she responded. That's how their love affair started. They eloped to Italy as EBB's father was against the match. He thought RB was after her fame and fortune, also she was an invalid or fragile in health? Speaking of trashing friends....the author Elizabeth Gaskell(Cranford, North&South) was friends with Charlotte Bronte(Jane Eyre). After Charlotte's death Elizabeth Gaskell wrote a biography on the author of Jane Eyre. She painted a very unflattering portrait of Charlotte....called her a sexless toothless plainlooking woman. PS: Haven't read the 3 bks mentioned. ;D

It really is a wonderful story whether or not you're into poetry. And, actually... IMO....neither one of them was that good. I read all of their poetry, I tried, I really tried but most of their work was so esoteric that I never got 'into' it. But their Letters....are wonderful. One of my treasures is a late 19th century boxed edition of the letters which I think may even be a first edition. (Have been meaning to investigate that.) I recommend getting your hands on a copy of those letters if you can....they're fascinating. P.S. I do like Jane Austen, it's just that they seem to be making new productions of her novels every 3 months or so. Well that's the way it feels sometimes. I forgot to mention faux biographies like "Becoming Jane" starring Anne Hathaway of The Devil Wears Prada fame. Even though I'm an American I wish they would only use British actors for these roles. I just think it's only proper. OK, I don't know how to do the "quote" function. Could someone instruct me? Please...

Using the quote function: Highlight the quote you want to, er, quote, then click on the little icon that looks like a piece of paper with a blue arrow. It's in the second row of icons, second from the end, beside the button list function. Or, you can type [*quote], put the quote here, then [/*quote], but without the *

They are more knowledgeable about these things. Will look out for the EBB letters. Thanx for the tip. Check the movie thread. I complained about 'Becoming Jane'.

I didn't realize you had commented on 'Becoming Jane', Jilly. I haven't seen the movie but it was constantly advertized on tv and I was turned off by it. Unfair I know. Anne Hathaway is not my idea of Jane Austen...although I don't know who would be. I didn't mean to say that all American actors should be banned from playing British roles because some of them are very good.

And don't even bother trying to find any kind of historical accuracy- if I'm not mistaken, they amalgamate a sister and a queen together to make one character! In series 3 the actor Rhys Meyers has refused point blank to put on weight to buff up or wear a fat suit. He seems to be dictating terms to the producers inspite of low ratings---having only 2 million viewers in the UK. BTW justafan he's the same guy who was in Bend it like Beckham. He was the coach.

Just when you think there is no other way to resurrect Jane! Don't know if we'll ever get the chance to see "Lost in Austen" (love the title) this side of the Atlantic. Oh yeah Lost in Austen will definitely be shown in N.America. They keep making Pride and Prejudice in different avatars bec it is very profitable and also very popular around the English speaking countries. Darcy/Lizzy love story blah blah. ;D I was checking the TV schedule and I noticed Lost in Austen is on at 8pm on the VIVA channel. If you are still interested you can tune in. Do you get VIVA in the US? I didn't even know we had this channel. There are 4 episodes and today's is the 3rd one, I think. As we were holidaying down in the south-west US last fortnight I missed the first 2 eps.

Wasn't sure where to put this because I didn't want to start a new thread but didn't want it to hide away in Misc. As this thread has covered a number of the issues raised in this footage, it made sense to put it here. A 'ten years on' interview with Simone. www.youtube.com/watch?v=exJa6hRqP9cSome interesting snippets. I know we discussed the whole 'who decided to leave/who fell on their sword' stuff. Here, Simone gives another insight. I also found her answer to 'do you still keep in touch?' question interesting. Even more so given the answer to the following question. (won't spoil it before you've heard it ) Shame Mandana hasn't done a similar interview. I doubt it as the producer seems to have had some connection to WITB - all the other vids are WITB. I reckon this is just part of a WITB interview.

Have to say Simone is looking better than I've seen her for a while. Must be the time away from work. Some very interesting points made and more considered answers to the questions. Is 10yrs too long to reprise the roles? I'm surprised she appears to be quite keen, wonder if the apparent lack of work might have something to do with it? Agree about Mandana and a similar interview. She always came across with intelligent, thoughtful and articulate comments. You never know though... Fingers crossed the interview might have given someone, somewhere a nudge in the right direction and a reminder that Miss Jones is out there ready to star in another series of some sort.

She is looking much better than she did in WitB, and I don't think it has anything to do with the lighting- she just looks healthier.
Ten years on, I'm going to give her the benefit of doubt and believe she is genuinely reflective about her experiences on Bad Girls. The majority of her responses were quite well thought out (wish the interviewer/editor hadn't done that flash cut to the next question though). There were two bits that made me raise my eyebrow, though- one was the bit where she said one of the reasons she decided to stay in series 3 was to give Nikki and Helen a happy ending. That may indeed have been one reason, but I can't imagine it was high up on the list of reasons. It sounds good to say now, long after the years have passed. The other moment of "oh really?" for me was when she claimed she didn't think Nikki and Helen would have children 10 years on. I think there is enough evidence to suggest otherwise- Helen was quite ambitious about having a family and even cited it as one reason she didn't know if a relationship with Nikki would work. Nikki then reassured her it was possible to have both.
2-7 "The Set-Up":
Helen: I wanted kids one day… Nikki: You can still have them, there are ways
So I'm wondering if that was more Simone's opinion rather than how the characters might have developed.
Other than that, not a bad interview. Nothing magnificently revealing, but certainly nice to hear her talking about a show she seemed to have tried to distance herself from in the past. Wonder when it was done? The interviewer talks about the show being on LOGO, but it's quite a ways into the series now, isn't it? I mean, well and long past the Nikki/Helen days.
Oh, and in my fact checking about LOGO, I was reminded that HBO was supposed to have the pilot episode done of the American remake by Thanksgiving... of last year. I had totally forgotten. I wonder what happened?

You're a star tc. That or you've nowt better to do Nah, just nicked it from elsewhere without giving credit To be fair, that was my reaction too. Whilst the interview, in places, was still playful, it came across as genuine and not flippant. Previous interviews - especially series 3 - were a disappointment to me because Mandana really came up trumps and Simone just seemed to be taking the p*ss. I was suprised too. In fact, this whole re emergence and reconnection with everything BG after such a long time is all very odd. Well, I do know that she kept Shed waiting with regard to signing for series 3. When the original publicity shots for series 3 were released, there was absolute uproar on the original BG messagebards because Simone was missing from all of them. The webmistress of the site told a number of fans that the reason was because she was refusing to sign and Brian Park, the producer, had basically said 'stuff her' and went ahead with all publicity without her. She eventually signed and that was when they did those rather strange photos of the whole cast in front of the gates images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/2900000/Bad-girls-cast-bad-girls-2954525-1800-1452.jpgThere have been so many different versions of what happened that it's hard to know the truth. Mandana is quoted as saying she wouldn't sign for series 4 so far in advance without seeing scripts. Maureen Chadwick said that Simone wanted to leave and they felt it was too much of a stretch to continue with Nikki. Simone says they all sat down and decided to finish it at series 3 for a happy ending! My feeling is that there's a bit of truth in all three versions. Well, I went back and had a listen to the WITB interview as well and actually the latter part of that is about BG too. Strangely, some of it is in the BG interview segment but there are added bits (might explain all the cuts cb). She mentions that she is about to be interviewed by someone at the University of California who is writing a book. It sounds like it's a book about BG. Not sure if I have interpreted that correctly or not.
